The Croft School History
The Croft boasts
a long and rewarding history, serving it's
surrounding community since 1915 when it
was first opened as 'Armitage County Council
School'.
Erected by Masons of Rugeley in 1914-15,
the original part of the school building
consisted of two rooms separated by a folding
sliding partition, with a cloakroom &
a cellar stoke hole.

This was opened by the Reverend E. Samson Rector
of Armitage on 1st February 1915. (Click on the
1915 school log book below to view the first two
pages recording this event)
The
school was extended in 1922 by the addition of
two more rooms and another cloak room. These new
rooms were first used on the 15th January 1923.
The second extension was completed in 1960 by
Carney of Rugeley. The additions were three classrooms,
two cloakrooms, staff room and store room.
The third extension was completed in 1963 by
Ward of Alrewas. The additions were one cloakroom,
a Head Teachers room, a Deputy Head teacher's
room, hall/gymnasium, kitchen and dining room,
toilets for staff and children, a coke bunker
and a store room. Also a new hard playground area
was created and the old playground was tarmacked.

Although based at our current location since
1915, we were cordially passed the roll of community
school by 'The Church Infants School', based in
nearby Pike Lane and originally established in
1872. (That building has since been converted
into a bungalow).
We are proud to still have in our possession
an original registry book from our sister school,
containing entries dating way back to 1890, some
images of which can be viewed below:
