School Meals

School dinner sticker design by JackThese are prepared daily on the premises in accordance with County Catering guidelines. Dinner money should be paid on Monday mornings, in a sealed envelope with the child's name and the amount of money clearly shown. Credit is given if a child is absent, except where a child has had to leave school after 11.00 am. The school operates a choice menu system for school lunches. School lunches cost £1.65 a day.

Children may also bring packed lunches. These are eaten with the children who are taking school lunches in the hall.

We prefer children who change from a meal to a packed lunch or vice-versa to give a weeks notice so that the kitchen orders can be adjusted.

Milk, squash, toast and a range of fruit supplied by County Catering are also available for purchase at morning break. We are members of the National Fruit Scheme, which provides children in Key Stage 1 with a piece of fresh fruit every day.

School Dinners: A note sent home by Mr. Davies regarding school dinners.

A high percentage of children bring packed lunches to school instead of taking a meal provided by the County's catering service through the school's kitchen. The numbers taking 'school dinners' has decreased further in response to recent media attention on the subject. Should the trend away from school meals cooked on site towards packed lunches continue, the school risks having the kitchen closed as uneconomic. For those choosing dinners this would mean food cooked elsewhere being delivered to us instead. This would be a very sad day for the school. Once closed, the kitchen would be very difficult to re-instate.

In an effort to address this issue a parent representative, Mrs. Pam Leedham, has been communicating with parents and Mrs.Guest, our cook to find out more. Informal discussions with parents have received a number of misconceptions about school meals. The following information is included to address some of them:

  • Staffs County Catering services has nutritionally balanced each meal offered for salt, sugar and fat.

  • Most of the food is cooked from scratch (e.g.: digger Pie which is lamb cooked with leeks, carrots and swede in gravy with a savoury top.)

  • Jacket potatoes, fresh fruit and salad are available every day.

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables are sourced from the region.

  • Chips are available once a week (occasionally twice.)

  • Children are encouraged to choose an item from each food group: carbohydrates, proteins and vegetables.

Parents Lunch

It has been decided to offer parents the opportunity, in the near future, to come and have school lunch with your child (ren) to see and taste for yourselves. County Catering are in the process of providing a new menu and we have decided that it would be best to invite you in after it has been established.
